Project Description

October 13, 1999, Jining Huahan Photovoltaic Power Station was officially put into production. It was completed by landfill in the mining area and the largest thin-film solar power plant in Asia at that time. The case adapted Pixel View Solar PV Energy DC String Monitoring System for project maintenance and supervisory. 

 

Background

Due to significant global energy shortage and climate change, the demand for renewable energy has increased significantly, especially the solar energy, for the past several years. In mainland China, the interior land is sparsely populated, where is suitable for the large-scale ground-based power station installation. In 2000, Taiwan Electric Power Group invested a 18MW large-scale ground solar power plant – Huayu Winery photovoltaic power plant in Shandong Province, Jining City, China. The station was built by the EverRich Energy Investment Ltd in the area where is initially the open-pit mine, and the area became a lake during the winter by reserving rainwater from the mountain. In the third year after the construction, the power plant’s annual power generation reached the range of 1.25 ~ 1.3 million kWh/1MWp, which was higher than the average power generation of adjacent power stations 1 ~1.1 million kWh / 1MWp.

 

Challenges

Huayu Winery photovoltaic power station is a 18MW large-scale solar power station with the scope 946 acres (0.8 km width and 1.2 km length), and total 52 inverters and 180,000 solar modules were installed in the power station. Therefore, EverRich Energy needs a thorough inspection from time to time to ensure the continuous operation of the PV station, which was complicated and time-consuming. Collaborating with local government who required satisfying outcome of project acceptance. EverRich Energy Investment Ltd decided to install a solar PV monitoring system, allowing the administrator to overview solar farm’s operation and O&M status in real-time to improve the power generation and plant management efficiency further.

 

Solutions

Billion Watts provided Pixel View, the PV solar monitoring system which can grasp detailed insight of solar farm at string level, as well as 522 units of 12-Strings DC Meters (SG3212), and 1 unit of Smart IoT Gateway (SG6300NZL). The DC string meter serves as an information collector by acquiring system information such as DC/AC electricity generation, DC/AC PR value, the efficiency per kilowatt power of each solar string, as well as temperature and SPD data signal for immediate damage repair caused by lighting and electrical transient surge.

Through wired (RS-485) and wireless (ZigBee) communication technologies, the Smart IoT gateway collected metering data and transferred to the cloud computing platform that users can remotely monitor solar productivity and cell efficiency with high measurement accuracy. Even during the connection downtime, all the data can be stored in the embedded memory card, enabling enough time for the connection to restore and prevent missing data.

Featuring floor plan displaying and intelligent diagnostic analysis functionality, Pixel View can pinpoint the location of the underperforming solar strings and deliver automatic alarm notification for instant failure detection, description, and status tracking, which reduces the danger of electricity leakage and electric fire due to short circuit incident. The Central console can immediately send the technicians on site for O&M service.

Compatible with all brands of the inverter and solar modules, Pixel View delivers flexible and scalable PV monitoring by catering to multi-national condition and customers’ needs. The system can be customized to meet a wide range of project requirements based on the site locations, system size, government rebate and local utility rate. It enables comprehensive report generation by defining the time-of-rate for various station locations and currencies to calculate the expected PV revenue and system ROI.

Pixel View immediately detected some wiring problems, which shortens the inspection process from 2 weeks to 7 days after the installation. Shandong province is covered by snow during December to March because of its high-altitude, which may cause a severe shading effect on solar modules. By adopting Pixel View monitoring system, the site managers can understand the degree of shading effect with a specific location. Since Huayu Winery photovoltaic power plant was built next to a lake, Billion Watts also provided a customized data analysis table of comparing the power generation between the general ground power plant and lakeside power plant.

 

 

Result

It would take 15 days to clean the site of the power plant before implementing the Pixel View. Hence the Huayu Winery photovoltaic power plant arranged cleaning works twice a month. By utilizing the monitoring system, which shows how the snow could affect the power generation, the site manager decided to increase the cleaning work frequency to 3 times a month. The system also delivered a checking report at 9 am and the second report at 3 pm to cross-check the results of the maintenance, speeding up the plant management and increasing the overall power generation efficiency by 20%.
